Elizabeth Bird interviews 96-year old survivor
Sylvester Okocha, Asaba, 2009.
By the end of 2013, the research team had interviewed almost 60 people who witnessed or survived the killings in Asaba. The first few were recorded at the 2009 October Symposium, with many more added in Lagos, Asaba, Benin City, and Ibadan, during five visits to Nigeria by Bird and Ottanelli from 2009 to 2012. On the following pages, video clips from various interviewees tell the story of what happened on the 6-7th October, and speak of the need to remember. Many were used to compile the video: Most Vulnerable Nigerians: The Legacy of the Asaba Massacres, available at: https://vimeo.com/71894404
Our partners in the USF Library are developing an archive of complete transcripts and audio files of all the interviews. Some are already available, while others will be added as they are transcribed and catalogued.
